Nuneaton Griff Hit Five as Young Side Impress at Burbage & Huncote

Nuneaton Griff picked up their first win of pre-season with a 5-1 victory away at Burbage & Huncote on Friday 10th July, a young Griff side stepping up well against fellow Step 7 opposition.

Dylan Mills opened the scoring before Burbage & Huncote levelled through Charlie Watts.

Jack Collins restored Griff's lead with a composed finish after the ball was recycled following a cross to the back post, and Griff went in 2-1 up at the break after Burbage struck the post from a 1v1 right on half time.

Five experienced players were introduced for the second half, and Griff pulled clear.

Mitch Piggon went round the keeper to make it 3-1, Ruben Wilson added a fourth, and Josh Harvey completed the scoring to make it 5-1.

Manager's Reaction

Speaking after the game, First Team Manager Wayne Hadley said:

"Firstly I would like to thank Macaulay for his hospitality and wish him all the best with his new project. Tonight we took 16 players over with Saturday's game against Ambleside Athletic in mind as well."

"It was great to see a very young 11, bar the experience of Williams at centre half, with an average age of probably 19."

"A 16 year old Joe Inglis stole the show at centre half, so comfortable for such a young lad taking 90 minutes senior football in his stride."

"First half we competed against a strong Burbage 11, edging it 2-1. Second half we added five lads with good experience, running out 5-1 winners."

"Pleasing for me all three strikers scored, in Mills, Piggon and Collins. All in all a good workout, minutes in the tank for players plus good experience for some of the younger lads."

"We move on quickly too, with a match tomorrow, see what that brings. The future looks bright."

Looking Ahead

Griff are back in action on Saturday against Ambleside Athletic, with a fresh 19-man squad set to feature as pre-season continues.

That match is set to kick off at 2pm at Nuneaton Academy.
